"I want to make a full comeback when I am 100 percent able to compete at the highest level of golf," DeChambeau said late Wednesday afternoon on Twitter.

After missing more than a month recovering from surgery to mend a bone in his left wrist, it appeared that DeChambeau would be returning to competitive golf.

He spent the day at Southern Hills Country Club hitting many shots from various tees, pushing the ball in various directions while testing his wrist, which was wrapped several inches up his left forearm. Despite playing the back nine, he blasted many drives while displaying no indications of pain.

When asked how his left wrist was feeling during his practice round, DeChambeau was coy: "It's still attached."

His return, however, was not meant to be.

DeChambeau, 28, had not played since early April, missing the cut at the Masters, the season's first major, after shooting a 12-over total in the first two rounds. He chose to have surgery on his left wrist to fix a broken hamate bone hook.

The recuperation time is usually four to six weeks.

DeChambeau remarked in an interview with Golf Channel before withdrawing from the event, "I'm proud of the fact that I'm here." "I'm proud of myself for sticking it through; I've had a lot going on recently, and the game hasn't been exciting for me, so I'm thrilled to get back and give it another go; everyone deserves a second chance."

During the long wait between holes, he autographed and took selfies with people for ten minutes. DeChambeau was joking and chatting with his playing partner, Anirban Lahiri, on Wednesday.

He shot a low draw with a 6-iron into the front bunker on the 14th hole, a par-3 that plays 230 yards, then dumped a second ball in mild annoyance. He nailed a high draw into the center of the green on his second attempt. Even while hitting off firm ground, there appeared to be no hesitation at impact.

DeChambeau, who won the US Open in 2020, Open at Winged Foot, he is currently ranked 22nd in the Official World Golf Ranking (down from No. 5 at his peak) and has 219 FedEx Cup points. He has only one top-25 finish in five outings this season, having missed the cut in three of his last four.

He finished fourth at the PGA Championship at Harding Park in 2020, his best finish outside of the United States. Win at Winged Foot in the Open.

In DeChambeau's absence, Denny McCarthy was added to the field for the first round on Thursday.
